Sri Muneeswara Swamy Temple

An ancient devasthanam of immeasurable sanctity, where the divine presence of Sri Muneeswara Swamy has blessed the devotees of Thummalapeta for generations.

Sthala Puranam

The Sacred Origin

Sri Muneeswara Swamy Temple at Thummalapeta, Kalikiri, stands as one of the most revered devasthanams in the Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh. The presiding deity, Sri Muneeswara Swamy, is a fierce and benevolent manifestation of Lord Shiva — the cosmic guardian who protects the righteous and bestows moksha upon sincere devotees.

According to the sthala puranam, the swayambhu (self-manifested) form of Sri Muneeswara Swamy appeared at this sacred kshetra in ancient times, drawing sages, munis, and devotees from across the region. The name 'Muneeswara' — Lord of the Munis — reflects the deity's deep association with ascetic wisdom and the liberation of the soul.

The temple has been a centre of Agamic worship and Vedic tradition, with nitya poojas performed according to the Shaiva Agama vidhi passed down through generations of archakas. The devasthanam continues to be a living tirtha, drawing pilgrims from across Andhra Pradesh and beyond.

Moolavar Mahima

Sri Muneeswara Swamy

Sri Muneeswara Swamy is worshipped as the supreme protector and liberator — a form of Shiva who wields the trishul of dharma, adorned with sacred rudraksha and vibhuti. The moolavar is enshrined in the garbhagriha and receives nitya abhishekam, alankaram, and naivedyam according to Agamic vidhi. Devotees believe that sincere darshan of the Swamy dissolves karmic bondage and bestows both worldly welfare and spiritual liberation.

Temple Architecture

The devasthanam follows the Dravidian architectural tradition, with a sacred gopuram marking the entrance to the temple complex. The inner mandapam features ornate stone pillars carved with divine motifs, leading to the garbhagriha where the moolavar resides. The temple complex includes the main shrine, a pradakshina path for circumambulation, and a sacred theertham.

Garbhagriha

The sanctum sanctorum houses the swayambhu moolavar of Sri Muneeswara Swamy, where Agamic poojas are performed daily by hereditary archakas.

Pradakshina Patha

The circumambulation path around the sanctum allows devotees to perform pradakshina — the sacred act of walking clockwise around the deity as an act of reverence.

Daily Worship & Agamic Tradition

The devasthanam follows the Shaiva Agama tradition in all its ritual observances. Each day begins before dawn with the Suprabhatam and Thiruvanandal, followed by the Pratha Kala Abhishekam. The Swamy is adorned with fresh flowers, vibhuti, and sacred ornaments before each darshan session.

Abhishekam

Sacred bathing of the moolavar with panchamrita, milk, honey, and sacred waters — the most intimate act of devotion.

Alankaram

Adorning the Swamy with fresh flowers, silk vastram, and sacred ornaments according to the Agamic vidhi.

Naivedyam

Offering of sacred food — rice, fruits, and sweets — prepared with devotion and offered to the Swamy before distribution as prasadam.

Deepa Aradhana

The waving of sacred lamps before the deity — the culminating act of each pooja session, accompanied by the ringing of bells and chanting of Vedic hymns.
